BKRK-award #Hout - Reglement (NL/ENG)

Missie 
De wedstrijd toont en lauwert zowel de nationaal als internationaal ondernemende creatieveling die vanuit zijn/haar expertise een product ontwikkelt. Het ontwerp is vanuit een historisch vakmanschap ontstaan met een duidelijke link naar Bokrijk als inspirerende voedingsbodem. Het resultaat heeft een positieve impact op de economie en de samenleving. Dankzij de gedeelde visie van een professionele jury met belangrijke expertise in de sector, de officiële prijsuitreiking en totaal-uitstraling vormt de BKRK-award een essentieel onderdeel van de focus ‘vakmanschap’ binnen Bokrijk. 

Organisatie 
VAKlab, het expertise- en dienstencentrum van Bokrijk rond vakmanschap en ondernemerschap, is organisator van de BKRK-award. VAKlab begeleidt makers, ontwerpers en ondernemers in het realiseren van dromen en ambities. Samen met partners versterken en ontwikkelen ze hedendaags vakmanschap als een meerwaarde voor de economie en andere sectoren. 
 
Gezien de nadruk van de wedstrijd ligt op vakmanschap en ondernemerschap is Flanders DC een niet te missen partner. Flanders DC is namelijk hét aanspreekpunt in Vlaanderen dat inzet op creatief en toekomstgericht ondernemerschap binnen design en mode. Samen met hen kan VAKlab vakmensen die willen doorgroeien naar een onderneming de gepaste begeleiding garanderen.  

1. Wedstrijdvraag 

De BKRK-award #hout legt de focus op het vakmanschap ‘hout’. 
We benaderen dit vakmanschap vanuit het heden gebaseerd op technieken uit het verleden, gekoppeld aan innovatie en relevantie. 

• Het product vertegenwoordigt authentiek vakmanschap in gebruik, techniek, materiaal en duurzaamheid. 
• Het product wordt ontwikkeld vanuit een hedendaagse en/of innovatieve relevantie. 
• Het product moet een economische meerwaarde genereren en de indiener heeft als doel verdere stappen te ondernemen met zijn concept.

Er is tijdens het traject ruimte voor exploratie met diverse experten. 
We zoeken niet enkel decoratieve objecten of producten waar er met aloude houttechnieken gewerkt wordt, we zoeken een brede waaier aan producten, concepten, diensten, ... die grenzen verleggen, innovatief zijn, iets nieuws brengen. De gebruikte materialen en technieken behoren tot de creatieve vrijheid van de indiener. 

2. Deelname 

De deelname staat open voor producten die voldoen aan de punten die worden omschreven in 1. Wedstrijdvragen en worden getoetst aan de criteria in 4.  Beoordeling. 

Deelnemers kunnen met maximum drie dossiers, concepten, ideeën inschrijven. Per deelname moet er een apart inschrijvingsformulier worden ingediend. 

Inschrijven betekent dat de deelnemer zich automatisch akkoord verklaart met de bepalingen in dit reglement. Elke inzending die niet voldoet aan de voorwaarden in het reglement wordt uitgesloten van deelname. Inschrijven kan online van 1 november 2023 tot en met 1 april 2024, 23.59 u op deze website.  

De inzending gebeurt op de voorgeschreven wijze, volledig en binnen de gestelde termijn. Indien de inzending hieraan niet beantwoordt, is de organisatie gerechtigd om deze uit te sluiten. 

De deelnemer verstrekt alle gevraagde informatie en is verantwoordelijk voor de waarheid en juistheid van de verstrekte gegevens. De deelnemer verklaart ook dat hij/zij met het deelnemend product geen inbreuk maakt op enig recht van derden: auteursrecht, recht van tekening, merk, model of andere rechten. Tijdens het traject zullen foto's genomen worden van de deelnemers en producten. Deze zijn vrij te gebruiken door Bokrijk. Het product voldoet, voor zover van toepassing, aan de wettelijke veiligheidsvoorschriften. De deelnemer vrijwaart de organisatie en de jury voor aanspraken van derden ter zake. 

Communicatie en events gebeuren in het Nederlands, indienen van dossiers kan in Nederlands of Engels.  

Deelnemers verbinden zich ertoe fysiek aanwezig te zijn op alle contactmomenten tijdens de wedstrijd. Niet aanwezig zijn op contactmomenten kan leiden tot uitsluiting van de wedstrijd. Deze data zijn terug te vinden onder punt 5. Verloop van de wedstrijd.  

3. De jury en experten

De leden van de jury zijn erkende autoriteiten binnen hun vakgebied: 

• Kaspar Hamacher: Ontwerper en ambachtsman die zijn praktijk ent op de natuur als uitvalsbasis en hout als kernmateriaal.  
• Stefan Dusart is sales en marketing director van Ethnicraft, een Belgisch bedrijf dat al vijfentwintig jaar tijdloze meubels en accessoires ontwerpt, produceert en wereldwijd verdeelt. De kern van Ethnicraft is steeds massief hout, kwaliteit en vakmanschap. Daarnaast is Stefan co-founder van duurzame zusterbedrijven Live Light & Re-loved.
• Pascal Cools: directeur Flanders DC, Flanders DC is het Vlaamse design- en modecentrum en werkt aan sterk toekomstgericht ondernemerschap in de design- en modesector 
• Veerle Windels: een gedreven journaliste met meer dan dertig jaar ervaring. Met verschijningen in nationale en internationale publicaties gaat ze altijd voor het verhaal achter de schermen.  

De experten die mee instaan voor het delen van kennis zijn: 

• Michaël Verheyden: Ontwerper wiens esthetiek eenvoudige geometrische vormen, minimalistische lijnen, deskundig vakmanschap en rijke materialen van hoge kwaliteit omvat. 
• Mathijs Huygebaert: De vakman achter Matisu, gespecialiseerd in ambachtelijk timmerwerk, traditioneel vakwerk, Japanse gebinten
• Coaching tijdens de zomermaanden (mei, juni, juli, augustus): De jury wijst per inzending twee coaches toe die samen met de indiener individueel de inzending verfijnen. De coaches worden op een later moment in de wedstrijd bekend gemaakt. 

4. Beoordeling

De inzendingen zullen beoordeeld worden op de volgende criteria: 

• Duurzaamheid en innovatie 
• Creativiteit
• Vakmanschap en techniek 
• Ondernemerschap - economisch potentieel 
• Storytelling  

De ingezonden producten mogen niet gecommercialiseerd zijn bij de uiterste indiendatum. 

5. Verloop van de wedstrijd 

Eerste jurymoment: 22 april 2024 van 10u tot 13u waar de juryleden beslissen welke 10 inzendingen weerhouden worden. De deelnemers zijn niet toegelaten op dit jurymoment. 
Ten laatste 29 april worden al de deelnemers én 10 geselecteerden op de hoogte gebracht per mail van de selectie van de jury. 

Meet en greet:  6 mei 2024 van 10u tot 16u in de Campus van het Vakmanschap in Bokrijk. Hier krijgen de geselecteerden de kans om te spreken met de jury en de experten. (verplichte aanwezigheid)

Zomermaanden (mei, juni, juli, augustus): de geselecteerden krijgen de tijd om hun project volledig te finetunen in functie van de gekregen feedback. Er worden coachingmomenten voorzien met coaches (2 x 2u) om te overleggen in functie van de beoordelingspunten (zie 4. Beoordeling).  

Tweede jurymoment: 9 september 2024 van 10u tot 18u in de Campus van het Vakmanschap in Bokrijk.  Hier krijgen de 10 geselecteerden elk 30' de tijd om hun prototype voor te stellen aan de jury. De manier hoe het product op de markt gebracht wordt speelt mee in de beoordeling. (verplichte aanwezigheid)

Aan het einde van de dag, nadat alle deelnemers hun prototype hebben voorgesteld, kiest de jury 3 finalisten. De 3 finalisten worden ten laatste 11 september verwittigd. De beslissingen van de jury zijn bindend. De genomineerden verbinden zich tot alle discretie over de selectie totdat Bokrijk de genomineerden heeft bekend gemaakt. 

6. De uitreiking en het slotevent

De winnaar van de BKRK-award #Hout zal bekendgemaakt worden op het slotevent op 19 september 2024 en krijgt een plaats op WONDER Kortrijk Creativity Festival. 

7. Prijs 

10 geselecteerden

• Meet en greet met de juryleden en experten op 6 mei 2024. 
• Individuele coaching tijdens de maanden mei, juni, juli en augustus met coaches (2 x 2u) 
• Professionele foto’s vrij voor eigen gebruik 
• Deel uitmaken van een netwerk met gelijkgezinden  
• De 10 geselecteerden worden opgenomen in een publicatie over de BKRK-award 
• Uitnodiging voor het exclusieve slotevent op 19 september 2024 

3 finalisten

• Video waarin het product wordt voorgesteld, vrij voor eigen gebruik  
• Tentoonstelling van de inzending 
• Visibiliteit en aanwezigheid op verschillende plaatsen waaronder de Campus van het Vakmanschap 
• Podiumplaats op het slotevent 

Winnaar   

• Uitgelicht persbericht  
• Verschijning in de media 
• Voorstelling van het product op het exclusief slotevent 
• Individuele coaching tijdens een etentje met Kaspar Hamacher en Stefan Dusart  na het traject. 

8. Communicatie                                                                                            

Bokrijk staat in voor de communicatie van de BKRK-award. Door ons breed netwerk betrekken we de verschillende partners hierbij om een (inter)regionaal bereik te hebben.  Maar ook de deelnemers zijn een belangrijke schakel in de communicatie. 

Om deelnemers de mogelijkheid te geven zoveel mogelijk “buzz” te creëren rondom hun indiening kunnen zij steeds tekst- en fotomateriaal van deze award bekomen via onze online kanalen. 

De tien geselecteerden ontvangen van de organisatie professioneel fotomateriaal (zie 7. Prijs) van hun eigen product. Deze zijn vrij voor eigen gebruik.  Er volgt een publicatie met de tien geselecteerden en ze zullen een podium krijgen tijdens het slotevent.  

De drie finalisten en hun werk worden na het tweede jurymoment professioneel gefotografeerd en gecapteerd in een video (zie 7. Prijs). Bovendien verschijnen ze in de verschillende communicatiekanalen over de BKRK-award, zowel offline als online.  

9. Aansprakelijkheid                                                                                       

De deelnemer is tijdens het verloop van de wedstrijd (zie 5.) bij contactmomenten verantwoordelijk voor het vervoer, de verpakking en de eventuele bijhorende kosten. De organisatie is niet aansprakelijk voor schade aan het ontwerp die ontstaan is als gevolg van verborgen gebreken en constructiefouten. 

10. Ter beschikking stellen concepten  

De drie genomineerden krijgen de kans om hun werk te presenteren op diverse plaatsen, op voorwaarde dat ze het product kosteloos en tijdelijk ter beschikking stellen. Bokrijk zal instaan voor de benodigde verzekering(en) en eventuele transporten. Hetzelfde geldt voor andere mogelijke toonmomenten.

The competition showcases and honours both national and international entrepreneurial and creative individuals who develop a product based on their expertise. The design should be founded in traditional craftsmanship with a clear link to Bokrijk as a source of inspiration. The result should have a positive impact on the economy and society. Thanks to the shared vision of a professional jury with significant expertise in the sector, the official prize distribution, and the overall image, the BKRK Award is an essential part of Bokrijk’s focus on craftsmanship.

Organisation 

Given the competition’s emphasis on craftsmanship and entrepreneurship, Flanders DC is a vital partner. Flanders DC is the foremost point of contact in Flanders as an organisation that is committed to creative and future-oriented entrepreneurship in design and fashion. Together with them, VAKlab can provide suitable guidance for craftspeople looking to transform their activities into a business.

VAKlab is Bokrijk’s expertise and service centre. With a focus on craftsmanship and entrepreneurship, VAKlab supports creators, students, startups and entrepreneurs in achieving their dreams and ambitions. Together with their partners, they strengthen and develop contemporary craftsmanship as an added value to the economy and other sectors.

1. Competition assignment 

The BKRK Award #Wood highlights the craftsmanship involved in wood techniques.
We approach this craftsmanship from the present perspective based on past techniques, with a link to innovation and relevance. 

• The product should represent authentic craftsmanship in use, technique, material and durability.
• The product should be developed in a way that reflects its contemporary and/or innovative relevance.
• The product should generate added economic value and the participant should aim to take further steps with this concept.  

During the process, there is room for exploration with various experts. 

We are looking not only for decorative objects or products that use time-honoured wood techniques, but for a wide range of products, concepts and services that are innovative, that push boundaries and that offer something new. Participants have the creative freedom to decide on the materials and techniques used.

2. Participation 

Participation is open to products that satisfy the points described in the section ‘1. Competition assignment’. The competition assignment will be judged on the criteria outlined under the section ‘4. Judging’. 

Each participant may register a maximum of three products. A separate registration form must be submitted for each entry.

By registering, participants automatically agree to the provisions outlined in the competition rules. All entries that do not meet the conditions specified in these rules will be excluded from participation. Participants can register on the BKRK Award | Bokrijk website from 1 November 2023 to 1 April 2024 (11:59 PM). 

Entries must be made in the prescribed manner, in full and within the specified deadline. If the entry does not comply with these conditions, the organisation is entitled to exclude it.

Participants must provide all requested information and are responsible for the truth and accuracy of this information. Participants must declare that the entered product does not infringe on any third-party rights, such as copyrights, design rights, trademarks, models or other rights. During the process, picures will be taken of the participants and products. These can be used freely by Bokrijk. The product must comply with the legal safety regulations to the fullest applicable extent. Participants indemnify the organisation and the jury against any third-party claims in this regard.

All communication and events will be conducted in Dutch, but files may be submitted in Dutch or English.

The participants undertake to be present on the specified contact dates during the competition. These dates can be found in the section ‘5. Course of the competition’.  

3. Jury and coaches 

Members of the jury are recognised authorities within their areas of expertise: 

• Kaspar Hamacher: a designer and craftsman who bases his practice on nature and wood as the core material. 
• Stefan Dusart: Sales and marketing director of Ethnicraft, a furniture company that specialises in creating authentic, contemporary and timeless furniture from solid wood and natural materials. Ethnicraft has been known for its high-quality craftsmanship for the past twenty-five years. Stefan is also co-founder of sustainable sister companies Live Light & Re-loved. 
• Pascal Cools: Director of Flemish design and fashion centre Flanders DC, which is committed to developing strong, future-oriented entrepreneurship in the design and fashion sector.
• Veerle Windels: a passionate journalist with more than twenty years of experience. With articles in national and international publications, she always goes for the behind-the-scenes story.  

The experts who will also help in sharing knowledge include: 

• Michaël Verheyden: Designer whose aesthetic encompasses simple geometric shapes, minimalist lines, expert craftsmanship and rich, high-quality materials. 
• Mathijs Huygebaert: The craftsman behind Matisu, which specialises in traditional carpentry, traditional half-timbering and Japanese trusses.

Coaching during the summer months (may, june, july, august):  

For each entry, the jury will assign two coaches who will work with the participant individually to improve the entry. The coaches will be announced later during the competition.  

4. Judging 

The entries will be judged based on the following criteria: 

• Sustainability and innovation 
• Creativity 
• Craftsmanship and technique 
• Entrepreneurship - economic potential  
• Storytelling  

The submitted products must not have been commercialized by the submission deadline.

5. Course of the competition 

First jury meeting: 22 April 2024 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., during which the judges will decide which ten entries to keep. The participants are not admitted to this jury meeting. All participants (including the ten selected participants) will be notified by e-mail of the jury’s selection by 29 April at the latest.

Meet and Greet: 6 May 2024 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Craftsmanship Campus (Campus van het Vakmanschap) in Bokrijk. Here, the selected participants will have a chance to speak to the judges and experts. (mandatory presence)

Summer months (May, June, July, August): The selected participants will have time to fully fine-tune their project based on the feedback received. Coaching sessions will be planned with the coaches (2 x 2 hours) to discuss the entries based on the judging criteria (see section 4 ‘Judging’).

Second jury meeting: 9 September 2024 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Craftsmanship Campus in Bokrijk (attendance mandatory). Here, the ten selected participants will each have 30 minutes to present their reworked proposal to the jury. The judging also will also into account how the product will be marketed.

At the end of the day, after all of the participants have presented their prototype, the jury will select three nominees. These three nominees will be notified by 11 September 2024 at the latest. The jury’s decision is binding. The nominees undertake to maintain full discretion regarding the selection until Bokrijk has announced the nominees.

6. Prize distribution and closing event                             

The winner of the BKRK-award #Wood will be announced at the closing event on 19 September 2024 and will be given the opportunity to be present at the WONDER Kortrijk Creativity Festival.

7. Prize 

Ten selected participants 

• Meet and Greet event with the judges and experts on 6 May 2024. 
• Individual coaching sessions during the months of May, June, July and August with the coaches (2 x 2 hours) 
• Professional photos to be used freely for personal purposes 
• Part of a network with like-minded people  
• Inclusion in a publication about the BKRK Award 
• Invitation to the exclusive closing event on 19 september 2024 

Three nominees 

• Video presentation of the product, to be used freely for personal purposes 
• Exhibition and reception during the WONDER Kortrijk Creativity Festival 2024 
• Presence at various venues including the Craftsmanship Campus 
• Place on stage at the closing event 

Winner   

• Featured in press release 
• Media appearance 
• Presentation of the product at the exclusive closing event 
• Individual coaching during a dinner with Kaspar Hamacher and Stefan Dusart at the end of the competition 

8. Communications                                                                                                                                  

Bokrijk is responsible for all communications concerning the BKRK Award. Via our broad network, we involve various partners in this to ensure both regional and interregional access. The participants also serve as an important link in the communication process.

Participants are free to use texts and photos about this award, available through our online channels, to create as much buzz as possible about their entries.

The ten selected participants will receive professional photos of their products from the organisation (see section 7, ‘Prize’). These may be used freely for personal purposes. There will also be a publication featuring the ten selected participants and they will be given a place on stage during the closing event.

The three nominees will be professionally photographed after the second jury meeting and recorded on video (see section 7, ‘Prize’). They will also be featured on the various online and offline communication channels dedicated to the BKRK Award.

9. Liability 

The participant is responsible for the transportation of the product to VAKlab, as well as for the packaging and all other associated costs. 

The organisation is not liable for any design damage caused by hidden defects and construction errors. 

10. Making the concepts available  

The three nominees will have the opportunity to present their work at various venues, including at the WONDER Kortrijk Creativity Festival and the Craftsmanship Campus, provided they offer the product free of charge and on a temporary basis. Bokrijk will arrange for the necessary insurance policy or policies. The same applies to other potential display opportunities.
