Are you curious about where our current customs and traditions stem from? Besides a rich collection of historical buildings and objects, the museum’s collection also includes intangible cultural heritage such as rituals, stories and techniques, and a number of traditional animal breeds. You can also find out about our horticultural and agricultural heritage with kitchen gardens growing vegetables from yesteryear, orchards, a hop field, herb garden, and more. How did our past inspire the present and future? Be amazed by four fascinating museum areas, each with its own unique perspective.
Kempen
The Kempen museum area focuses on the craftsmanship of the past, present and future. Immerse yourself in the history of bread and textile, watch craftspeople at work and get creative in one of the three barn workshops.
Haspengouw
In Haspengouw, you will experience history first-hand. Our Living History actors immerse you in rural life in 1900 through historical scenes. Explore the beautifully restored houses and be sure to dive into the new dressing-up suitcase, where you can literally dress up in the past. In the Dove House, the beautifully restored museum farmhouse, you will get to know historic animal breeds.
Oost- en West-Vlaanderen
Enjoy the tranquillity and beauty of the cultivated landscape as you amble through this museum area. Making it the perfect place to recharge your batteries. In the distance you’ll spy the Bokrijk ponds and Cycling Through Water, and you can also get a look at these from the Dovecot Tower. Visit the houses and watch demos given by the herbalist, leather tanner and miller.
The Sixties
In "The Sixties", authentic interiors of a living room, petrol station and café take you back in time. Objects, photos, music and film footage immerse you in the culture of daily life in the 1960s. This season’s theme is BIRTH, which we have visualised with objects from our own collection, including a unique pram.
