Cycling through water

'Cycling Through Water' is a unique cycling experience that involves cycling across more than 200m of pond water. This cycle path opened in April 2016, and since then countless cyclists and walkers have experienced the magic of this place for themselves.

The cycle path leads you straight across a pond, right from one side to the other. In the middle, the water flanks at eye level. You feel, see and smell the water. Giving you a stunning, unique perspective of this natural element. Looking across from a distance it is rather funny to see all those heads pass by at water surface level.  Even though it is called Cycling Through Water, the path is also accessible to walkers and runners.

Overlooking De Wijers

Near junction 91 is the info and rest point View of De Wijers. In the distance, you can see the historical buildings of the Open-Air Museum. The Dovecot Tower in the museum is set up as a second viewpoint. Good for a panoramic view over the ponds of De Wijers nature reserve.

Bunker Bokrijk

Observation bunker

Another landmark on your (cycling) path: the above-ground WWI observation bunker, part of the art project 'the bunker weeps'. Rainwater is collected on the bunker's roof after which it slowly drips down the outer wall, creating a (lime) tear, a reference to the suffering caused by WWI.

More than 100 years ago, this bunker served as an observation post for shooting exercises by the Germans. After all, from the height they could better see where the projectiles hit. So be sure to look up and discover the observation holes via a periscopic mirror. Bats also find this bunker interesting. They nest there in a special hive. The bunker is also one of the seven stops on the guided cycle route for groups.
