In the museum sections of Kempen (Campine) and East and West Flanders, craftsmanship is central. Our craftsmen and -women are happy to show you the tricks of their trade and take you into the world of craft techniques.

Leather worker

Can you see the difference between leather from a sheep, goat, pig, cow, snake, ostrich, ...? Our leather workers show you their knowledge and skills. They make the most beautiful creations from cow leather by hand (handbags, key rings, wallets, cases) and tell you more about their work, tools and techniques.

Potter

Have you always wanted to see how a professional potter conjures up the most beautiful vases and bowls from clay from behind a potter's wheel? The potter will be happy to talk to you and tell you more about her centuries-old craft, various finishing techniques and contemporary applications.

Basket weaver

A hop basket, brood basket, teuten basket, stuik basket, pluck basket, laundry basket, mandelette, treuzel, koekenwis, chicken transport basket, shopping basket, ... Baskets come in all shapes and sizes. With soaked wisps, basket weavers conjure up the most beautiful baskets from their 'hand'. They introduce you to this old and labor-intensive craftsmanship and show you various weaving techniques from the past and present.

Shepherd

Our shepherds, together with their faithful four-legged friends, guide the beautiful herd of Ardennes Fox Heads through the Open Air Museum. They stop at various meadows where they let the sheep graze and where there is the chance to gently pet the sheep.

Blacksmith

When the blacksmith is present, you can hear his/her hammer hitting the anvil from far away. But step a step closer and you will also feel the heat of the fire, smell the scent of the iron and hear the hissing of the hot iron as it cools in the water barrel. The blacksmith will be happy to welcome you into the forge, where he/she can share his/her passion and work with you.

Beekeeper

Our beekeeper will teach you more about one of the most valuable animals that exist: the bee! Through a 'viewing box' you can follow the ins and outs of a bee colony up close. With a bit of luck and the help of our beekeeper you might even find the queen bee. Also discover what you can do with honey and beeswax. And how useful and important the wild bee is.

Herbalist

Our herbalists or herbalists conjure with herbs, plants, flowers and fruits. They welcome you with open arms, introduce you to various herbal preparations and teach you the power of herbs. Together with them, you compose a bag of your own herbal tea to take home with you, according to taste.

Miller

The museum houses two windmills (a standard and octagonal mill), an oil mill, a water mill and a horse-driven mill. All mills are fine examples of craftsmanship! Discover which mill is kept running today by a team of 3 millers. They will welcome you to their mill and take you along in their story.

Baker

Do you also love the smell of freshly baked bread? Or do you like to bake yourself? In the bakehouse of the Kilbershoeve in Meeuwen we bake bread daily according to the traditional method. Experience how we heat the baking oven in the morning with mutsaarden and how we then bake the sourdough breads on the hot stones. The baker tells you about the entire process and the collection pieces that are on display.

Weaver

De weefster weeft aan het grote weefgetouw in Hooghuis Tessenderlo. Ken jij het verschil tussen ketting- en scheringdraden? En weet jij hoe ze de inslagdraad met een schietspoel erdoor schieten? Onze weefster doet het je graag voor. We weven met hennepdraden van Belgische oorsprong. Het eindresultaat wordt telkens gebruikt in het Openluchtmuseum.

Barber

Are you a boy or a man, 10 years or older? Then the barber will gladly take care of you. Take a seat in his vintage barber chair and surrender yourself completely. He shaves, cuts and cares for your beard or moustache so that you can continue exploring the museum completely refreshed.
